NLC Orders University Administrators to Suspend Planned Strike Pending Resolution

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) to suspend its intended industrial action as efforts continue to resolve a dispute involving the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the NLC confirmed receipt of GAUA’s petition accusing GTEC of failing to comply with a previous ruling. The Commission reminded both parties of its earlier directive issued on June 9, which urged constructive engagement between GAUA and GTEC to address the underlying issues.

According to the NLC, both parties are expected to report the outcomes of their discussions by July 9, 2025. A meeting has been scheduled for that date at 11:00 a.m. at the Commission’s office.

“The Union is therefore directed to refrain from any intended action… since parties are scheduled to appear before the Commission on 9th July, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. for reporting,” the NLC emphasized.

As part of the latest directive, the NLC has also ordered GTEC to formally respond to the allegations of non-compliance by the close of business on Friday, June 27, 2025. If GTEC has fulfilled the Commission’s previous instructions, it must provide evidence to substantiate its compliance.

The dispute stems from issues relating to the withdrawal and reduction of certain allowances for GAUA members, and the enforcement of directives on office-holding and salary structure concerns. The Commission’s intervention aims to prevent disruptions in tertiary education administration while ensuring that all parties adhere to lawful procedures.
