Impeachment hearings now resemble legal battle, not impartial inquiry – Torkornoo

Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has raised concerns over the conduct of the committee investigating petitions for her removal, accusing it of mimicking an ordinary courtroom trial rather than serving as an objective fact-finding process.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on Wednesday, June 25, she criticized the way evidence is being handled, arguing that the petitioners’ legal team appears to have disproportionate influence over what information is presented to the committee.

According to her, this approach compromises the neutrality expected in such inquiries and breaches established procedures.

“The entire process is being treated like a standard legal case between myself and the petitioners,” she said. “Their lawyers are now selectively deciding which portions of evidence from public officials are submitted for consideration.”

She further noted, “This practice contradicts the known rules that govern how a committee of inquiry should operate.”
