Elect leaders who solve problems, not those who stoke tribal and religious division – Kufuor to NPP

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reject tribal and religious bias as they prepare to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 elections.

Speaking at the launch of the party’s new think tank, the Patriotic Institute, on Wednesday, June 25, Kufuor emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles and choosing a candidate who can address Ghana’s real challenges.

His remarks follow rising internal tensions and personal attacks among aspirants, as the party gears up for its January 31, 2026, flagbearer election.

“We are a democratic party that believes in the value of every human being,” Kufuor stated. “Democracy is not about tribe, religion, or gender—it’s about the individual. One person, one vote. To win power, we must put forward someone who appeals broadly to the electorate.”

He cautioned that if the NPP allows identity politics to dominate, it will only reinforce the long-standing accusations that the party is ethnocentric.

“For years, opponents have labeled us a tribal party. Now, we’re even adding religion. And if these words are coming from our own people, then we are feeding that narrative ourselves,” he warned.

Kufuor called for introspection and a renewed focus on national unity, urging party members to support a leader who can bring solutions that benefit all citizens.

“We must be honest with ourselves. Our candidate should be someone capable of addressing national issues and delivering broad-based development that touches every community.”
