The National Youth Authority (NYA) has announced that more than 150,000 young Ghanaians have signed up for the National Apprenticeship Programme—far exceeding the initial target of 10,000 participants for the first phase.
This overwhelming response, according to the NYA, highlights the eagerness of the country’s youth to embrace opportunities for skills training and employment.
Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday, June 24, during a meeting with master craftsmen focused on skills development, NYA Deputy CEO Jacob Adongo revealed that applicants are currently going through registration and assessment processes. Training is expected to begin in July and will offer hands-on apprenticeship in various trades.
“Our youth are hardworking and determined—they’re not lazy. What they need is opportunity, and that’s exactly what this programme offers,” Mr. Adongo stated. “We urge them to take full advantage of it, stay focused, reduce distractions like alcohol and drugs, and work hard.”
He added that participants will receive transportation stipends and starter kits to support and encourage them throughout their training.
