Minority opposes Mahama’s nomination of seven Supreme Court Justices

The Minority in Parliament has opposed the nomination of seven justices to the Supreme Court by President John Dramani Mahama.

The caucus contends that the nominations undermine constitutional order and judicial independence, particularly given the Supreme Court’s failure to act during earlier breaches of natural justice, including the suspension of the Chief Justice.

Addressing Parliament during the debate on the Appointments Committee’s report on Tuesday, June 24, Ranking Member on the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, warned that the development sets a dangerous precedent for future judicial nominations.

“It’s not that the justices are not competent, we do not doubt their competence, but Mr Speaker, it’s flooding the box. This is the first time we are having 7 justices at a time. … This is unprecedented, it has never happened in the country, and this must not be allowed…”he said.
