GTEC Confirms TEWU-TUC as Sole Workers’ Representative on Public University Councils

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has officially named the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) as the only recognized body to represent staff on the Governing Councils of all public traditional universities.

In a statement released on Tuesday, June 24, GTEC clarified that the decision follows consultations and deliberations involving both TEWU-TUC and the Tertiary Education Workers’ Union (TEWU-GH), amid a long-standing dispute over legitimate representation.

GTEC explained that after obtaining legal advice, it was confirmed that TEWU-TUC holds the legitimate mandate to serve on the university councils.

“The Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) is the duly recognized representative on the Governing Councils of Traditional Universities,” the statement emphasized.

Consequently, GTEC has directed all affected universities to immediately swear in TEWU-TUC representatives and extend to them all rights and privileges attached to their positions.

Additionally, members of TEWU-GH have been instructed to cease presenting themselves as Council members, even if they had previously been sworn in.

GTEC expressed hope that this directive will put an end to the ongoing confusion and called for the cooperation of all stakeholders moving forward, as stated by the Commission’s Director-General, Professor Jinapor Abdulai.
