Road Projects Stalled Nationwide Due to Debt – Roads Minister Responds to Concerns Over Ofankor-Nsawam Highway

Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has revealed that nearly all road construction projects across the country are currently stalled due to a crippling debt burden inherited from the previous administration.

His comments came in response to a strongly-worded statement by the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG), which issued a four-day ultimatum demanding the immediate resumption of work on the Amasaman-Nsawam highway, describing the road’s current condition as hazardous and economically damaging.

In their statement, C-DAG lamented:

“The road is barely motorable, damaging our vehicles, putting lives at risk, and disrupting our daily business operations… This is not a threat, but a plea born out of frustration and necessity.”

They also called on media houses, civil society, traditional leaders, and the public to rally behind their demand for urgent government intervention, warning of a possible demonstration if action is not taken swiftly.

Responding on Monday, June 24, Minister Agbodza acknowledged the public frustration but clarified that the delays are largely due to the unsustainable awarding of contracts under the previous government without guaranteed funding.

“Almost all road projects are currently stalled due to debt and unsustainable levels of awarding road projects without regard for the availability of funds,” he said in a brief statement.

He added that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, is working to raise funds to settle outstanding debts and bring contractors back on site, including for the critical Ofankor-Nsawam stretch, which he said is being prioritized under the government’s renewed infrastructure drive.

“We are picking up some of them, including the Ofankor project, as part of the big push to prioritise their completion.”

The Ofankor-Nsawam road is a vital transportation corridor linking Accra to the Eastern Region and beyond, and its stalled reconstruction has drawn growing criticism from transport operators, commuters, and residents alike.

As pressure mounts from the public and stakeholders, the Roads Ministry is expected to provide a clear timetable for resumption and completion of key road projects to restore confidence and ease transportation challenges nationwide.
