NPP Has Been Hijacked by Money – Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe Laments Decline in Party Meritocracy

Veteran statesman and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has issued a scathing critique of the party’s internal politics, lamenting the erosion of meritocracy due to rampant vote-buying.

In an exclusive interview on Kessben FM, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stated that in the past 12 to 15 years, individuals with no real qualification or contribution to the party have bought their way into leadership roles, undermining the very foundation of the NPP.

“People who do not deserve to come close to party leadership have ascended to power simply because they had the money to buy votes,” he said. “This is not only happening at the national level but even more deeply in our internal party elections.”

He described the trend as dangerous and deeply entrenched, warning that it threatens both the democratic integrity of the NPP and the credibility of Ghana’s broader political system.

“When money becomes the ticket to power, accountability dies,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe cautioned, adding that such practices breed corruption, voter disillusionment, and ineffective governance.

He called on the NPP leadership to take urgent corrective action, including enforcing strict internal disciplinary standards and ensuring transparent, merit-based selection processes.

“If this is not checked, we will see the continued decline in the calibre of political leadership. Constituents will lose faith in their representatives, and Ghana’s democracy will suffer.”

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s remarks come amid growing public concern over the influence of money in Ghanaian politics, particularly within major political parties, where campaign financing often overshadows competence and credibility.
