Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign, has accused the camp of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of creating a false sense of popularity through what he described as orchestrated endorsements by former government appointees.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, June 23, Kwarteng dismissed claims that over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) had genuinely thrown their weight behind the former Vice President’s bid to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2028 general elections.
“It’s not the first time we are seeing this. These staged endorsements are aimed at giving an illusion of momentum, but they don’t necessarily reflect the true mood of the party base,” he said.
Kwarteng referenced similar tactics used in previous internal elections, suggesting that such maneuvers did not translate into a definitive win. “This was done in the last election, convincing polling station executives with high-profile endorsements, and we all saw how it ended.”
He stressed that the Kennedy Agyapong campaign remains grounded in grassroots engagement, focusing its efforts on directly connecting with the over 200,000 polling station executives across the country.
“Our confidence lies in the people who matter most in this race. We trust the grassroots to choose a leader who is marketable, electable, and capable of uniting the party,” Kwarteng stated.
Taking a further jab at the Bawumia campaign, he added:
“They can continue to deceive themselves with choreographed support, but we know the delegates are more discerning now. They won’t fall for illusions. They’ll go for the candidate who truly resonates with the rank and file.”
His comments come after Dr. Bawumia met over 200 former MMDCEs at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, as well as more than 60 sitting NPP Members of Parliament—events seen as consolidating elite backing ahead of the January 2026 internal presidential primary.
As the race to succeed Dr. Bawumia as NPP flagbearer for 2028 intensifies, the growing tension between the two leading camps—Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong—highlights the deep internal contest over the party’s future direction.
