A total of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) between 2017 and 2024 have officially endorsed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The endorsement was announced during a press conference held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Monday, June 23. The group, operating under the banner Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia, described their support as “strong and unshaken,” vowing to fully commit their political experience and resources to secure Dr. Bawumia’s victory.
“Our endorsement goes beyond symbolism—it is strategic and operational,” the group stated. “With 95% of us having served as former Constituency and Regional Executives—some with over 16 years of experience—we have a deep understanding of the NPP’s internal dynamics and electoral machinery.”
The forum emphasized that after careful consultations with various aspirants and analysis of their competencies, Dr. Bawumia emerged as the most qualified and visionary leader to lead both the party and Ghana into the future.
They commended him for spearheading major national innovations such as mobile money interoperability, the Ghana Card, and the paperless ports system, noting these reforms had significantly improved public service delivery and economic formalization.
The former MMDCEs also praised Dr. Bawumia’s leadership style, describing him as inclusive, approachable, and a unifier. They highlighted his wide appeal among grassroots members, youth, and swing voters, positioning him as the NPP’s best chance of retaining power in 2028.
“Dr. Bawumia already enjoys nationwide visibility and support. Starting the next campaign with a familiar and trusted face gives the NPP a clear advantage. Introducing a new candidate now would be a gamble we cannot afford,” they added.
As part of their pledge, the group vowed to mobilise grassroots structures across all 16 regions of Ghana. Their action plan includes:
This show of solidarity comes in the lead-up to the NPP’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, a date officially confirmed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, following National Council approval.
The declaration by the former MMDCEs signals growing momentum within the NPP ranks as Dr. Bawumia positions himself for a return to frontline politics after the 2024 elections.
