Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Communications Director for the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team, has revealed that nearly all members of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Council endorsed the decision to hold the party’s presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.
Appearing on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 21, Aboagye stated that 98% of Council members voted in favor of the date, describing it as a strong demonstration of unity and consensus within the party’s top decision-making body, second only to the National Congress.
He criticized individuals who, after having their concerns addressed internally, choose to publicize dissenting opinions, arguing that such actions go against party cohesion.
“Once the National Council has voted—with 98% backing the decision—taking a minority view public is contrary to party principles,” he said.
Aboagye emphasized that internal disagreements are allowed and even encouraged during deliberations. However, he maintained that continuing to promote these views externally after a final decision has been reached undermines unity and fosters internal strife.
“You had your chance to raise the concern within the Council. But once the decision is made, pushing that minority opinion into the media only breeds division,” he added.
His remarks come amidst ongoing criticism from within the party regarding the timing of the primaries. Despite this, the party’s leadership has maintained that the process was legitimate and inclusive.
NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, earlier confirmed that the January 31 date was recommended by the party’s constitution review committee and subsequently approved by the National Council. He also clarified that this decision will not be reviewed or altered by the upcoming delegates’ conference, as the Council holds the constitutional authority to set such dates.
