Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, has urged his supporters in Parliament to remain focused and committed as momentum builds behind his potential 2028 bid for the party’s leadership.
On Thursday, June 19, over 60 NPP Members of Parliament visited Dr. Bawumia to express their open support for his anticipated run in the 2028 general elections. While grateful for their solidarity, Dr. Bawumia cautioned against complacency, stressing the need for hard work ahead.
“There is a lot of work to be done,” he stated, grounding the enthusiastic display in a message of continued diligence.
The visit represents one of the strongest early endorsements for any potential successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Dr. Bawumia, encouraged by the turnout, acknowledged the significance of the support he has received.
“It was a very happy visit. It was a courtesy call, and it was also a show of support for me — and I’m truly grateful,” he said.
He revealed that over 60 MPs have now pledged their support, which represents about 68% of the NPP’s 88-member parliamentary caucus — a significant show of confidence from within the party’s legislative ranks.
“The members of parliament essentially have control over their constituencies, and their support means a great deal in reaching the grassroots,” Dr. Bawumia added, recognising their influence across the 275 constituencies nationwide.
Despite the growing support, he reiterated the importance of staying focused on governance and party duties.
“And so we move forward — there’s still a lot of hard work to do for the party and the country,” he concluded, underscoring his commitment to results and development over early political celebrations.
The level of backing places Dr. Bawumia in a strong early position as the party’s likely frontrunner for 2028, setting the stage for a competitive and closely watched leadership race.
