Former government spokesperson, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has claimed that at least 50 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have thrown their support behind Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s bid to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Atumpan on AsaasePa 107.3 FM on Wednesday, Boakye-Danquah cited internal assessments that indicate Agyapong currently commands around 37% support from the party’s grassroots—a figure he believes puts him within striking distance of securing the flagbearership.
“He only needs about 13% more to cross the threshold,” Boakye-Danquah said. “Support is shifting away from the Vice President’s camp. While figures like Bryan Acheampong and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum are also in the race, Kennedy Agyapong is emerging as the unifying force among MPs and the base.”
He emphasized that a growing number of lawmakers are aligning themselves with Agyapong’s campaign. “As we speak, 50 of our MPs have officially declared their support for Kennedy,” he stated.
With the NPP scheduled to elect a new presidential candidate in 2026 following its 2024 electoral defeat, the contest is shaping up to be highly competitive. Analysts say internal rifts and a strong push for new leadership are setting the stage for a defining moment in the party’s future.
