NPP Warns of Nationwide Protests Over Ablekuma North Electoral Deadlock

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a stern warning to the Ghana Police Service and the Mahama administration, accusing them of deliberately obstructing the Electoral Commission (EC) from concluding the collation of parliamentary results in the closely fought Ablekuma North Constituency.

In a statement released after a National Council meeting, the NPP alleged that the Police—acting on instructions from the Minister for the Interior and the Attorney General—have willfully ignored a High Court directive mandating them to provide security for the EC to finalize results from three outstanding polling stations.

“The Electoral Commission has confirmed that there is no legal barrier preventing it from completing the process,” the statement read. “Yet, in blatant defiance of the court order, the Police are refusing to cooperate—clearly because the NDC has lost the seat.”

The party accused President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using state security to suppress the will of voters and delay the outcome to their advantage.

“Mahama and the NDC are weaponizing the Police to block the collation process because they know they’ve lost. This is a calculated attempt to hijack democratic institutions and deny the people of Ablekuma North their parliamentary voice,” the party stated.

Calling the situation a serious threat to democracy, the NPP vowed to initiate nationwide actions to pressure the authorities to allow the EC to conclude its work without political interference.

“We are putting the government on notice: in the coming days, we will launch a series of actions to demand that the democratic rights of Ablekuma North residents are upheld,” the party declared.

The parliamentary outcome in Ablekuma North remains one of the few yet-to-be-declared results from the 2024 elections, with tensions escalating over the prolonged delay.
