Supreme Court should have 20 Judges – Justice Mensah

Supreme Court Judge nominee, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, has proposed the appointment of at least 20 justices to the Supreme court, citing the court’s broad jurisdiction and increasing caseload.

According to him, the volume and complexity of matters handled by the Supreme Court require a significant increase in its judicial strength to ensure efficiency and timely justice delivery.

He made the recommendation while responding to a question during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, regarding the ideal number of justices needed to effectively manage the Court’s workload.

“…inferably, you will see that there are more cases, and as the cases build up, and they are expensive, it is only fair and reasonable that judges must be recruited to deal with those cases,” he stated.

“So if you ask me the minimum number that I will recommend for appointment to the Supreme Court, given the nature of the work they do, they end resulted with so many cases.

“Therefore, I will suggest 20 judges who should go to the Supreme Court. Given the cases that are in the Supreme Court, in my humble opinion, I will recommend that 20 judges be appropriate.”
