In a powerful show of unity and grassroots engagement, the Women Parliamentarians, led by Hon. Comfort Doyoe, Caucus Leader, visited Makola Market and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to stand in solidarity with market women and directly address their pressing concerns.
The visit, held under the theme “Bridging the Gap”, aimed to close the disconnect between national policymakers and women in the informal sector. It created a vital platform for parliamentarians to listen to the everyday challenges faced by traders and pledge their commitment to advocate for meaningful solutions.
Hon. Comfort Doyoe underscored the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of market women, recognizing their immense contribution to the economy. “These women are at the heart of our communities. Ensuring their security and business continuity is not just an economic issue—it’s a matter of social justice,” she stated.
The caucus reiterated its unwavering support for women-owned businesses and expressed commitment to influencing policy that enhances access to financial services, infrastructure, and safe trading environments. Their presence was not just symbolic but a testament to collaborative governance and inclusive development.
The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, joined the delegation and commended the Women’s Caucus for the meaningful engagement. He emphasized the city’s ongoing efforts to balance trader needs with urban planning, including road accessibility and sanitation.
The visit marks a significant step towards strengthening collaboration between lawmakers and the informal sector, particularly women entrepreneurs, ensuring their voices are not only heard but acted upon. It also sends a strong message about the importance of responsive leadership and the value of proximity in governance.
