President John Dramani Mahama has strongly criticized the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for what he described as a misleading reclassification of the Sunyani Regional Hospital as a teaching hospital.
During his Thank-You tour of the Bono Region on Friday, May 30, President Mahama stated that the facility lacked both the necessary infrastructure and legal framework to justify its designation under the NPP government.
He announced that his administration has now taken steps to formally and legally upgrade the hospital.
“The previous government’s announcement of Sunyani Regional Hospital as a teaching hospital was not supported by any legal instrument. We have rectified that. The Council of State has approved the hospital’s board, and we are now working with UENR to begin training health professionals to serve Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and surrounding regions,” he said.
President Mahama also revealed plans to establish a medical school at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).
“UENR’s development has stalled due to insufficient investment. Our new NDC administration is committed to reversing this. One of the first measures we’ve taken is to uncap the GETFund, which will unlock more resources for critical educational infrastructure.”
He added that GETFund has recently completed an infrastructure audit at UENR and is set to begin construction of additional facilities to support the launch of a full-fledged medical school.
