Isaac Adongo, Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, has taken a jab at the Minority in Parliament for what he describes as a premature end to their protest in support of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.
On Thursday, May 29, Minority MPs staged a walkout and marched from Parliament to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters in Accra, demanding Wontumi’s release amid ongoing investigations into alleged financial misconduct involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank). The protest caused significant traffic congestion and drew a strong police presence.
Wontumi was arrested on May 27 by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and later handed over to EOCO. Although he was granted bail of GH₵50 million on May 28, with two sureties required to be justified, he remained in custody as the conditions had not yet been met.
Despite the protest, the Minority MPs returned to Parliament on Friday, May 30—prompting Adongo to mock their apparent change of stance.
“Wontumi must be disappointed that you’re back here debating. He probably expected you to stay with him at EOCO overnight. You claimed to have abandoned Parliament, yet here you are,” Adongo remarked on the House floor.
He continued, “Wontumi’s being misled. While he’s still detained, you’re here asking for more holidays. We saw you sitting on the floor, but when we went to EOCO at 7 p.m., you had vanished.”
In a related development, the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is reportedly spearheading efforts to help meet the bail conditions for Wontumi.
