The Dormaahene and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Dr. Fredua Agyemang Badu II, has emphasized the importance of following due process in the investigation of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi is facing multiple serious allegations, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. According to Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai, who posted updates via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is spearheading the probe, with asset recovery actions already underway.
Speaking during former President John Mahama’s “Thank You Tour” in the Bono Region on Friday, May 30, Osagyefo Dr. Agyemang Badu II stressed the need for an impartial and lawful approach to the case.
“If anyone breaks the law, they must be held accountable. Even I, Agyemang Badu, if found culpable, should face the law. But if no wrongdoing is established, no one should be unfairly targeted,” he said.
The Dormaahene acknowledged his fondness for Chairman Wontumi but insisted that personal admiration must not interfere with justice.
“I like Chairman Wontumi a lot, but that doesn’t mean legal procedures should be bypassed. If I’ve done wrong, the law must be applied,” he asserted.
He also criticized Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s sit-in protest at the EOCO headquarters, describing it as an inappropriate form of advocacy.
“I’m not against supporting a colleague, but I was uncomfortable seeing the Minority Leader sitting on the floor at EOCO. He’s an honorable man. Next time, he should inform me so I can send someone with a chair,” the chief said with a touch of humor.
His remarks contribute to the growing chorus of voices calling for fairness, transparency, and non-partisanship in the handling of politically sensitive legal investigations.
