Suspended Chief Justice acting as if presumed guilty – Dafeamekpor

Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has accused suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo of behaving in a manner suggestive of presumed guilt, following her strong condemnation of the committee investigating her potential removal from office.

Justice Torkornoo, in a supplementary affidavit filed at the Supreme Court, described the proceedings of the Justice Pwamang-led committee as a “mockery of justice” and a “ruse” aimed at unfairly removing her from office.

She further claimed that the process had violated her dignity and fundamental rights, describing her treatment as both inhumane and degrading.

Among her key concerns was the choice of venue for the hearings, which are being held in a high-security zone. She argued that the location was both intimidating and inappropriate—especially when compared to similar proceedings in the past that were conducted at the Judicial Service’s Court Complex.

Responding to her statements, Dafeamekpor criticized the Chief Justice’s public denunciations and urged her to respect the judicial process.

“I think that she should rather allow [the law to work]. She is acting in a manner that is presumptive of guilt,” he said during an interview on Face to Face on Channel One TV with Umaru Sanda Amadu.

Justice Torkornoo’s legal challenge remains active, while the committee’s work continues under increasing political and public scrutiny.
