Security has significantly been tightened at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following the arrest of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The arrest, which took place shortly after Wontumi had honoured an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist with an undisclosed investigation, triggered a strong response from party members.
Large crowds of NPP supporters and regional executives quickly gathered at the EOCO headquarters in Accra, demanding clarity and access to their colleague.
Their presence created a tense atmosphere, prompting the deployment of military personnel to the scene to ensure order and prevent any potential escalation.
As of Tuesday evening, EOCO had not officially disclosed the specific reasons behind Wontumi’s detention, fuelling speculation and concern within political circles.
In a related development, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, expressed outrage over what he described as unjust treatment of the party stalwart.
Speaking to reporters, he criticised EOCO for allegedly refusing to grant party executives access to Wontumi and condemned what he perceived as politically motivated harassment.
“This situation is unfortunate. Denying access to our own Regional Chairman without justification raises serious concerns,” Nana Boakye said. “We will not tolerate any form of political intimidation disguised as law enforcement.”
The incident has deepened partisan tensions, with the NPP signaling its readiness to resist what it views as targeted actions against its members ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Meanwhile, EOCO has yet to issue a public statement regarding the nature or status of the ongoing investigation involving Chairman Wontumi.
