Former ECG MD Dubik Mahama under investigation as container scandal deepens

The former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, is under investigation by security agencies in connection with the case of 2,637 unaccounted-for containers consigned to the company at the Tema Port.

The probe follows revelations from a multi-agency investigative committee, including National Security, the Ministry of Transport, GPHA, and Customs, which discovered the containers—far exceeding the initially reported figure of 1,300.

In an interview with 3News.com, the Spokesperson and Head of Communications for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, revealed that as part of the ongoing investigations, Mr. Mahama has been invited by security officials, and his caution statement has been taken.

In addition, some ECG staff have also been asked to step aside to allow for an unfettered inquiry into how thousands of containers remained untracked for extended periods, accruing significant demurrage costs.

The issue stems from a flawed procurement process in which items were consigned directly to ECG without arrangements for timely clearance.

As of April 30, 2025, ECG still had 2,583 outstanding containers located across several port terminals, including Meridian Port Services, GPHA terminals, and private logistics yards.

The Attorney-General’s Office is expected to provide further legal direction, while the Minister for Energy and Green Transition has assured the public that anyone found culpable will be held accountable.
