Ghana Needs a National Airline that Mirrors Its Aspirations – Joyce Bawah Mogtari

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Senior Presidential Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, has underscored the importance of reviving Ghana’s national airline, calling it a strategic move essential for the country’s economic advancement and global competitiveness.

Following the formation of a 10-member task force to drive the initiative, Mogtari remarked, “Ghana deserves an airline that reflects our ambition, self-reliance, and readiness to lead.”

Under President Mahama’s renewed leadership, the push for a national carrier has regained traction—this time with an emphasis on more than just improved connectivity. The initiative also aims to support job creation, foster technology transfer, and drive economic diversification.

“The absence of a reliable national airline has constrained our ability to fully leverage opportunities in regional and international aviation,” Mogtari said. “Now is the time to address that gap.”

She stressed that success hinges on sound governance and professional operations. “A well-managed national airline can be a beacon of national pride and economic resilience,” she noted, adding that it must be built on principles of efficiency, innovation, and world-class service.

The proposed airline will follow a commercially viable model with space for strategic partnerships to ensure long-term sustainability.

Beyond transportation, Mogtari highlighted the project’s broader economic impact, particularly for tourism, trade, and skills development. “Establishing direct routes from Accra to key global hubs will boost business travel and tourism,” she said. “This will have a positive ripple effect across hospitality, logistics, and aviation services.”

She further emphasized the benefit to Ghana’s youth, who stand to gain from employment and training opportunities across the aviation value chain.

In conclusion, Mogtari reaffirmed the Mahama administration’s commitment to seeing the project succeed. “This is an opportunity to redefine Ghana’s aviation story—with discipline, vision, and political will,” she stated. “It’s not just about restoring national pride, but building a sustainable economic future.”
