Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team, has emphasized the urgent need for robust institutional backing for Attorney General Dominic Ayine to effectively prosecute individuals implicated in financial misconduct, particularly from previous administrations.
Suhuyini argued that the scale of alleged corruption during the past eight years under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is unprecedented and must not be overlooked. He called for decisive action to ensure that accountability is pursued to its full extent.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Wednesday, May 14, Suhuyini said, “No one can downplay the level of rot and corruption this country has witnessed in the last eight years. We cannot ignore it. That’s why the Attorney General needs the full support of the state to hold the perpetrators accountable.”
He added that establishing a culture of accountability would not only address past wrongs but also serve as a warning to current and future public officials.
“Even appointees under the current Mahama-led government must understand that any misconduct will not go unpunished if there’s a change of government. We must establish that precedent,” he said.
His remarks follow the recent criminal charges filed against Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi for allegedly authorizing a $2 million payment in 2019 to Africa Investor Holdings Limited for a Sky Train project in Accra—a project that was never implemented. The charges, under Sections 23(1) and 179a(3)(a) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), relate to conspiracy to commit a crime and wilfully causing financial loss to the state.
Suhuyini stressed that such prosecutions must transcend partisanship, framing them instead as a constitutional imperative vital to safeguarding the public interest and deterring misuse of state resources.
