“It Was a Private Act of Kindness” – Sammy Gyamfi Responds to Backlash Over Viral Video

In the wake of widespread backlash following the circulation of a video showing him giving money to controversial figure Nana Agradaa, Sammy Gyamfi has issued a public statement clarifying the context of his actions and offering a heartfelt apology to those who felt let down by the gesture.

“Folks, I have taken notice of the wave of criticisms against my person in the last 24 hours,” Gyamfi began, acknowledging the uproar that erupted across social and political circles after the footage went viral. The video raised eyebrows, particularly among members of the opposition and civil society, many of whom questioned the appropriateness of his association with Agradaa, a figure known for her chequered past.

According to Gyamfi, the act was nothing more than a spontaneous expression of compassion. “This was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and life-long custom of lending a helping hand to people in need,” he explained. He stressed that the exchange was intended to remain private and never meant to be politicized or interpreted as an endorsement.

“I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable,” he added.

In a conciliatory tone, Gyamfi addressed critics, especially those within his own political camp. “To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”

While apologizing, the National Communications Officer for  NDC reaffirmed his commitment to public service, stating that his principles remain intact. “Let me state, however, that my view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems and help others, has not changed,” he asserted.

He also expressed gratitude to those who offered support and guidance during the controversy: “My profound appreciation goes to all those who have reached out to counsel and encourage me. I’m most grateful for your solidarity.”

Despite the controversy, Gyamfi emphasized that he remains undistracted from his responsibilities, particularly his role in national development as entrusted by the President.

The statement, while receiving mixed reactions, has opened conversations about the responsibilities of public figures, the boundaries between private actions and public perception, and the scrutiny that comes with leadership.
