Ho Circuit Court jails three youthful robbers 19 years for iPhone theft

A Ho Circuit Court has jailed three armed robbers for a total 19-years imprisonment.

The convicted persons are Mercy Sokpe, aged 22, Atsu Kamasa, aged 25 and Godfred Dzidonu, aged 19.

The facts of the case presented in court were that, on the 4th of May, 2025 and at about 4:30pm, the three convicted criminals planned to rob the complainant, 21-year old Elijah Togbedzi of his iPhone 6s valued at GHC700 around the Ho market.

According to the prosecution, Mercy Sokpe first approached the complaint and requested to use his phone for a selfie to which the complaint obliged.

In the process of taking the selfie, Mercy was said to have signaled her accomplices who attacked the complainant with scissors and the three bolted with the iPhone.

The complainant during the confrontation raised alarm that led to the arrest of Godfred Dzidonu, one of the robbers with the phone.

Police investigations led to the arrest of Mercy Sokpe and Atsu Kamasa from their hideouts in Ho.

On Thursday, 8th of May, 2025, the three were arraigned before the Ho Circuit Court on two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

They pleaded guilty to the charges and were convicted on their plea and sentenced to three (3) years each on the charge of conspiracy while Atsu Kamasah and Godfred Dzidonu were additionally sentenced to five (5) years each for robbery by the court presided over by his Honor Osman Abdul-Hakeem.
