Interior Minister engages Zongo Chiefs on combating drug abuse

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating illegal drug use and trafficking, particularly within Zongo communities.

Speaking during a community engagement with Zongo Chiefs and Muslim opinion leaders at Abossey Okai New Zongo in Accra, the Minister underscored the critical role of law enforcement in addressing the menace.

He warned that individuals involved in drug-related activities, regardless of their status or affiliations, will face the full rigour of the law.

“The abuse and trafficking of illegal drugs not only destroys lives but also disqualifies individuals from accessing government opportunities and programmes,” he said, urging the youth to shun drugs and make the most of available development initiatives.

Alhaji Muntaka also highlighted the broader social and economic consequences of drug use, calling on community members to be vigilant and proactive.

He encouraged Chiefs, Imams, and community leaders to take a firm stand against drug use, report suspicious wealth, and help expose criminal activity.

“No one will be spared. The law will catch up with anyone involved in drug-related offences,” he stated.

The Minister further emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in upholding the rule of law.

He advised against mob justice, instead urging residents to report wrongdoers to the appropriate authorities.

Addressing the youth directly, Muntaka appealed to them to align with government efforts aimed at improving livelihoods.

He urged them to uphold Islamic values and protect the integrity and future of their communities.

The Chief of Zongo in Accra, Yaaya Amisu Baako, expressed appreciation for the Minister’s visit and pledged the support of traditional and religious leaders in tackling the drug menace.

This engagement marks a renewed call for collaboration among stakeholders in building safer, healthier, and more prosperous communities.
