Retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba has strongly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for opposing the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, accusing the party of hypocrisy and lacking the moral authority to comment on the issue.
His remarks come in the wake of a demonstration held on Monday, May 5, in Accra, by the NPP and its allied political parties, demanding the Chief Justice’s reinstatement. Protesters claimed that President John Dramani Mahama’s action was unconstitutional and undermined judicial independence.
But in an interview with Joy News, Justice Atuguba challenged the NPP’s record on upholding judicial independence during its time in government.
“How did they behave when they were in power? Did they act in transparency and in the public interest?” he asked.
He went on to condemn what he described as the exclusion of public interest in Ghana’s political discourse and labeled the NPP’s current stance as deeply hypocritical.
“These are the things I detest — sheer hypocrisy. Where was their concern when the judiciary was widely mocked on social media as ‘Unanimous FC’ before the last election? Was that Mahama’s doing? They were in office. What did they do to fix it?” he questioned.
