CJ Suspension: I May Seek Review if Supreme Court’s Justification Is Unconvincing – Vincent Assafuah

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has signaled that he might request a review of the Supreme Court’s decision in the Chief Justice removal case if the Court’s legal rationale fails to persuade him.

On Tuesday, May 6, the Supreme Court, in a narrow 3-2 ruling, rejected Assafuah’s application to suspend proceedings related to the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and to lift her suspension.

The decision to dismiss the injunction was made by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and Justices Yonny Kulendi and Amadu Tanko. Justices Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Ernest Gaewu dissented. The Court stated that the full justification for the ruling will be disclosed on May 21, 2025.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, Assafuah acknowledged the Court’s deferral of its full reasoning and said he would wait for the explanation before making a final decision. However, he made it clear that a review is a strong possibility.

“They’ve said the reasoning will be released on May 21. Once I see it, I’ll assess whether it’s compelling. If it is, I’ll let the matter rest. If it isn’t, I’ll likely pursue a review,” he stated.

Assafuah also highlighted that the split ruling indicates some support for his legal position within the Court.

“Even before seeing the reasoning, it’s notable that two justices sided with my arguments. That alone suggests I may return to the Supreme Court,” he added.
