NPP Struggling with Leadership Bias and Internal Mistrust – Dr. Arthur Kennedy

Former NPP presidential aspirant and political commentator Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy has raised red flags over what he describes as deep-seated leadership bias and growing internal distrust within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Thursday, May 1, Dr. Kennedy criticized the party’s internal governance, accusing it of lacking transparency and fairness—particularly in how key post-election reports are managed and how certain individuals, especially Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, appear to receive preferential treatment.

“The party has long struggled with issues of leadership bias, or at least the perception of it,” he remarked.

He questioned the composition of the Mike Oquaye-led committee formed to review the party’s electoral defeat and took issue with the report’s limited circulation. “It’s clear Dr. Bawumia has seen the report, based on comments he’s making during the Thank You tour. But others with legitimate aspirations to lead the party have not. That’s simply unfair,” Kennedy argued.

He warned that such unequal access to information erodes trust and undermines internal democracy within the NPP at a time when unity is critical.

Dr. Kennedy also questioned the intent behind the party’s current “Thank You” tour, suggesting it appears more like a political strategy than an effort to mend party wounds. “The tone and timing of the tour seem more about securing political ground than rebuilding trust,” he said.

He further criticized Dr. Bawumia for implying that the shortcomings of the Akufo-Addo administration were largely not his fault, suggesting that such remarks risk sowing division. “It sounds like Dr. Bawumia is subtly blaming former President Akufo-Addo, and that could stir unnecessary internal conflict,” he warned.
