Akufo-Addo No Longer Supports Bawumia’s 2028 Presidential Bid – Dr. Arthur Kennedy Claims

Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy, a medical doctor and former NPP presidential hopeful, has claimed that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is no longer supporting Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid for the presidency in 2028.

In an interview on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Thursday, May 1, Dr. Kennedy confidently asserted that Akufo-Addo has withdrawn his support for Dr. Bawumia, despite their long-standing political alliance and Bawumia’s role as the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer.

“I can say with certainty that Akufo-Addo will not back Bawumia’s future candidacy,” he stated, confirming he was making the claim publicly.

When pressed for the basis of his claim, Dr. Kennedy withheld details but invited any informed party members to refute him if he was wrong. “Let those who know the truth speak up—time will reveal the facts,” he said.

Out of what he called respect for Akufo-Addo, Dr. Kennedy said he would leave it to the former president to explain his reasons when he chooses.

His comments came amid discussions on internal party tensions during the NPP’s ongoing “Thank You” tour. Dr. Kennedy criticized Dr. Bawumia for shifting blame onto Akufo-Addo for the government’s failures, calling the move divisive.

“He’s clearly blaming the former president, and that’s not right,” he remarked.

He also recommended that the NPP suspend the tour, citing internal disagreements and suggesting that not all the current challenges are Bawumia’s fault. “Sometimes, even with good intentions, things go wrong,” he noted.

If accurate, Dr. Kennedy’s revelation could deepen internal divisions within the NPP as it prepares for a leadership transition ahead of the 2028 elections.
