A significant deployment of police and military personnel has been observed at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, commenced a major mediation effort to address the prolonged conflict in Bawku.
The heightened security presence is intended to protect the dignitaries, traditional rulers, and key stakeholders attending the peace negotiations.
This mediation initiative comes at a time when tensions in Bawku remain elevated due to persistent violence and a longstanding dispute over chieftaincy.
Otumfuo’s involvement is widely regarded as a pivotal move toward fostering understanding and reconciliation between the opposing sides.
Speaking to Citi News, Sarfo Kantanka, a historian at the Manhyia Palace, emphasized that comprehensive security protocols had been instituted to guarantee a smooth and incident-free dialogue.
“Conflict situations naturally demand increased security. The presence of security forces should be expected,” he remarked.
“Unlike past discussions which were entirely open, this time the mediation will adopt a dual approach — with some parts held privately and others made public.”
