MP for Pru East and Parliamentary Health Committee Advocate for Advanced Systems and Infrastructure to Bolster Sunyani Teaching Hospital

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Pru East, Hon. Emmanuel Kweku Boam, alongside other members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, has called for the adoption of advanced accounting systems and the integration of information technology to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.

Hon. Boam emphasized that the committee’s visit aimed to identify the pressing challenges facing the hospital and formulate strategic interventions to improve service delivery. “The purpose of this working visit is not only to assess the needs of the hospital but to work towards solutions that will help the facility provide quality healthcare to the people of this region,” he said.

During the engagement, the Regional Health Director highlighted the urgent need for a new regional hospital following the upgrade of the former regional facility to teaching hospital status. He proposed the completion of an uncompleted 60-bed hospital at Odumasi to serve as the new Bono Regional Hospital.

Supporting this vision, Dr. Cardinal Newton, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, outlined critical challenges currently facing the hospital. These include inadequate space, outdated equipment, aged transport vehicles, and limited capacity to recruit new staff due to financial clearance constraints. He also stressed the need for an infectious disease center to strengthen the hospital’s preparedness for future public health threats.

The leader of the parliamentary team, Hon. Sebastian Sandaare, MP for Daffiama/Bussie/Issa, commended the hospital staff for their dedication. He assured them of government support, reaffirming the commitment of former President John Dramani Mahama to equitable healthcare development across the country. “We are committed to ensuring that healthcare resources are fairly distributed to support the efforts of hospitals nationwide,” Hon. Sandaare affirmed.

The visit marks a significant step in efforts to modernize healthcare infrastructure and systems in the Bono Region, with a collective resolve from lawmakers to drive progress in the sector.
