Government Releases Final List of District Chief Executive Nominees

The Government of Ghana has officially released the final batch of nominations for District Chief Executives (DCEs), marking the conclusion of a nationwide appointment process aimed at revitalizing local governance structures.

In a press statement from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, signed by Minister Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim (MP), the public was informed that the nominations were made by the President in line with Article 243 (1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20 (1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended. The statement references a letter from the Office of the President (Ref. No. OPS 100/25/1621) dated April 23, 2025.

This final list contains 29 nominees from various regions including the Savannah, Bono East, and Greater Accra Regions. Among the notable names are:

  • Savannah Region: Abdulai Mahmud (Bole Bamboi)
  • Bono East Region: Masud Musah Ayaaba Thomas (Atebubu-Amantin)
  • Greater Accra Region:
    • Ignatius Godfred Dordoe (Shai Osudoku)
    • Samuel Tetteh Kwarshie Morton (Kpone Katamanso)
    • Freeman Tsekpo (Ashaiman)
    • Ella Esinam Nongo (Adenta)
    • Michael Kpakpo Allotey (Accra Metropolitan)
    • Alfred Gaisie (Korle Klottey)
    • And many more across key urban districts such as Ablekuma, Ayawaso, and Tema.

The nominees, selected in accordance with the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017, are now pending approval by their respective District Assemblies before formally assuming office.

This final announcement signifies the end of the appointment process for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives under the current administration. The nominations, signed off by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, were also copied to the Vice President and the Chief of Staff at Jubilee House.

The Ministry has urged all relevant Assemblies to expedite the approval processes to ensure effective governance and development delivery at the local level.
