The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has officially commenced the licensing of service providers within the gold trading sector, as part of a broader effort to streamline operations and enforce regulatory compliance. The announcement, made in a press statement released today, marks a key milestone in Ghana’s gold sector reforms.
Starting Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Ghanaian individuals aged 18 and above, as well as fully Ghanaian-owned companies, can apply for licenses either online via goldbod.gov.gh or in person at the GoldBod’s main licensing office in Accra.
The licenses available for immediate application include:
- Aggregator License
- Self-financing Aggregator License
- Buyer License (Tier 2)
- Buyer License (Tier 1)
Additional licenses—such as those for refining, smelting, fabrication, storage, transportation, and importation—will be open for application from July 2025.
Applicants are encouraged to read and understand the terms and conditions before applying. All guidelines, procedures, and policy details are accessible on the GoldBod website.
In line with its regulatory mandate, GoldBod also reiterated a crucial directive requiring all gold transactions to be carried out at the official Bank of Ghana (BoG) Reference Rate, available at bog.gov.gh.
Most notably, GoldBod reaffirmed its order for all foreigners currently engaged in Ghana’s local gold trading market to exit by April 30, 2025. Violators will face penalties under the Ghana GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140). Foreign entities, however, are permitted to apply for permission to off-take gold directly from GoldBod.
GoldBod expressed its commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to restructure and enhance the gold trading sector for maximum national benefit.
“We count on the full cooperation of the public and shall continue to prioritize your feedback,” said Prince Kwame Minkah, Media Relations Officer for GoldBod.
