NPP Sets Up 9-Member Committee to Amend Constitution Based on Oquaye Report Proposals

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formed a nine-member constitutional amendment committee in response to recommendations made by the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led 2024 election review committee. This decision was taken after the National Council received and reviewed the committee’s report at a meeting held on April 16, 2025, in Accra.

The original 11-member review committee, chaired by the former Speaker of Parliament, was tasked with investigating the causes of the party’s defeat in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. Following the submission of their findings, the party leadership has resolved to act on certain key proposals—especially those that involve amending sections of the party’s constitution.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong confirmed that the amendment committee will begin work immediately.

“If you recall, in January, the National Council tasked a review committee to examine the 2024 elections. Today, Prof. Mike Oquaye and his team submitted their final report. Based on the summary presented, it’s evident that constitutional changes are necessary. As a result, a 9-member committee has been constituted to examine and act on those proposals,” he said.

Mr. Frimpong also urged party members and the media to be patient, noting that the full details of the report would be shared in due course.

“We urge our supporters not to jump to conclusions or speculate about the content of the report. There is only one report, and it is currently with the National Council. In due time, we will communicate the relevant aspects to the rank and file of the party,” he added.

He further revealed that the party leadership would soon embark on a nationwide tour to engage members and share insights from the report.

The National Council meeting was attended by several key figures within the party, including former President Nana Akufo-Addo, 2024 presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and other senior party officials.
