Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, a political scientist and a notable figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that he would have expelled former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from the party had he been in the position of chairman.
He holds the former president directly responsible for the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, claiming that Akufo-Addo’s conduct and leadership style significantly damaged the NPP’s image and electoral fortunes.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based TV3, Dr. Baah expressed disappointment over the silence of party members who, according to him, are afraid to criticize Akufo-Addo openly. “Everyone knows the truth, but they’re afraid to speak. The president became arrogant, sidelined party structures, and even threatened or campaigned against his own MPs. If I were chairman, I wouldn’t have tolerated it — I would have thrown him out,” he asserted.
He also criticized the current NPP Chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, for failing to rein in the former president, alleging that Akufo-Addo wielded excessive influence within the party and acted with impunity.
Dr. Baah further accused Akufo-Addo of attempting to maintain control over the NPP even after its electoral loss, calling it an unacceptable overreach. “He hijacked the party and brought it to this point. After such a colossal failure, he should have stepped back and left the stage. But instead, he still wants to dictate who leads the party,” he lamented.
He warned that any further interference by the former president in the party’s future direction would be strongly resisted. “The NPP doesn’t belong to him. The signs are clear — he’s no longer popular, and it’s time he accepted that and moved on.”
Dr. Baah concluded by citing Akufo-Addo’s refusal to reshuffle his ministers despite widespread calls as another factor that led to the party’s defeat, emphasizing that leadership missteps ultimately cost the NPP dearly.
