Afenyo-Markin Urges Supreme Court Judges to Stand Together Amid Petition Against Chief Justice Torkornoo

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on Supreme Court justices to stand in solidarity with Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo in the wake of alleged attempts by the Mahama-led administration to remove her from office.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on April 16, following a National Executive Committee meeting of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Afenyo-Markin cautioned the judiciary against allowing itself to be divided by political interference.

“We are aware of attempts by persons in government to push for the removal of the Chief Justice from office,” he said. “The judiciary must not be seen as a tool for partisan interests. What is happening is unacceptable, and it is clear the NDC wants to infiltrate the judiciary and make it partisan. My advice to the judiciary is simple—stand together.”

He warned that any perception of division among the justices could embolden those seeking to manipulate the judiciary for political gain. “Let not someone create the impression that removing one of you benefits another. Today, it may be her; tomorrow, it could be you,” he added.

Afenyo-Markin strongly defended Chief Justice Torkornoo, dismissing the grounds for her possible removal as “flimsy and pedestrian,” and called on the judiciary, the Ghana Bar Association, and civil society organisations to openly condemn the petition.

“The judiciary must rise as one body and reject this move. The legal community must not remain silent. These baseless allegations should not be entertained,” he stated.

The Minority Leader also appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to use his final term in office to protect democratic institutions and leave behind a legacy of statesmanship.

“This is President Mahama’s last term. He is no longer part of the mainstream political fray. This is the time to show leadership and keep the hardliners on the fringes. Allowing such divisive moves will harm our democracy,” he concluded.
