Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to rein in certain aggressive figures within his administration following the failed attempt by National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) operatives to arrest Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on April 10, Afenyo-Markin condemned what he described as intimidation and harassment of political opponents by state officials, labeling it as unacceptable and dangerous for democratic governance.
“The government has given its explanation. If you disagree with setting up a bipartisan committee or a commission of inquiry, that’s your prerogative. But subjecting an MP to threats and trauma through your agents is wrong,” he said.
He urged President Mahama to step in and restrain what he referred to as “hawks in the government,” warning that such behavior only fuels political tension and undermines national unity.
Afenyo-Markin further cautioned that these actions could revive the fear and suppression reminiscent of the PNDC era, where political arrests were common. He stressed that governance should prioritize development and the welfare of citizens, not political vendettas.
“Though four years might seem far off, they’re closer than we think. As politicians, we must break this toxic cycle and redirect our focus to issues that truly impact the people,” he stated.
He also hinted at covert efforts targeting high-ranking officials, including the Chief Justice, saying the Minority is aware of such developments and will respond appropriately.
