The increasing influx of foreign competitors in Ghana’s construction industry has raised concerns among industry stakeholders, who worry that local businesses could be sidelined.
In response, there is a growing demand for stricter enforcement of government regulations to safeguard the interests of local players.
According to Section 5(1) of the Architects Act 1969 (NLCD 357), the Council is responsible for maintaining high professional standards in architecture and preserving the integrity of the industry.
Addressing the Ghana Institution of Surveyors’ Annual General Meeting in Accra, Charles Amissah Koomson, Managing Architect at Multi-Build Consult Limited, highlighted the need to protect local businesses.
“The construction sector in Ghana is experiencing an influx of foreign professionals. While this fosters healthy competition, we must enhance regulatory measures to ensure that foreign practitioners meet the required qualifications,” Koomson stated.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening the capabilities of local professionals and exploring opportunities to export their expertise to international markets.
