Anti-Flood Taskforce Takes Action: Government Officials, Military Engineers Tour Accra’s Flood Zones Ahead of Rainy Season

As the rainy season looms, a high-powered anti-flood task force has launched an extensive tour of Accra’s flood-prone areas to assess preparedness and mitigation efforts. The team, led by the Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), included the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs; the Minister for Works and Housing; the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces; and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

The task force visited key flood hotspots such as Odawna, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Alajo, Ashaiman, Weija, and Dansoman to inspect drainage systems, ongoing desilting projects, and discuss flood prevention strategies with local authorities and residents.

During the tour, the Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations) stressed the government’s commitment to proactive flood mitigation. “We are here to ensure necessary measures are taken before the rains begin. This is about long-term solutions, not just emergency responses,” he stated.

The Minister for Works and Housing highlighted ongoing investments in drainage infrastructure, including culvert expansions and enforcement of building regulations to prevent encroachments on waterways. Military engineers from the 48 Engineers Regiment assured residents of their readiness to provide swift interventions if needed.

Residents in Kaneshie and Adabraka raised concerns about clogged drains and indiscriminate waste disposal, which exacerbate flooding. In response, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs urged the public to maintain clean surroundings and adhere to waste disposal regulations.

The tour concluded with a stakeholders’ briefing, outlining an action plan to intensify public education, enforce regulations, and fast-track drainage projects. With these concerted efforts, Accra’s resilience to flooding is expected to improve, offering hope to residents affected by annual flood disasters.
