EC contract workers demand unpaid wages for 2024 elections

Some contract workers of the Electoral Commission (EC) in the Greater Accra Region are demanding payment for services rendered during the 2024 general elections.

The workers, who were engaged by the commission in December 2024 to assist with the electoral process, claim they were promised GHC600 but have yet to receive their compensation despite multiple follow-ups.

Speaking to Citi News on March 7 under anonymity, one of the affected workers expressed frustration over the delay and urged the EC to fulfill its obligation.

“I texted some of the officials, but there was no reply. They said the payment would come, but it didn’t. Others also followed up, yet nothing happened. If the EC knows we have not been paid, then it’s really bad because you cannot hire someone, let them work for you, and then not pay them while you sit comfortably.

“For any job, when you employ someone, you need to pay them immediately after the work is done. I’m just appealing to the EC to resolve this issue as soon as possible so that no one has to keep complaining because a lot of people are affected,” the worker lamented.

Some of the affected contract staff served as presiding officers, verification officers, name list reference officers, and ballot issuers during the elections.

They have expressed disappointment over the EC’s silence on the matter and are calling on authorities to urgently address their concerns.
