The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has announced that the first phase of its nationwide payroll monitoring exercise has saved Ghana approximately GH₵345 million.
The initiative, which targeted 120 public sector institutions across four regions, aimed to curb excessive wage expenditures and promote greater transparency in public sector employment.
Speaking on The Pulse Show on JoyNews, FWSC CEO Benjamin Arthur revealed that the monitoring efforts resulted in significant financial savings last year.
“In 2023, we managed to save GH₵345 million through our payroll monitoring exercise,” he stated.
Beyond the financial impact, Arthur emphasized that the initiative also contributed to improved productivity within the public sector.
“The benefits go beyond cost savings. Through our field monitoring and payroll reviews, we have been able to gather valuable insights to enhance efficiency,” he explained.
He further noted that analysis from the payroll monitoring exercise suggests that up to 8% of public sector wage expenditures could be saved annually.
“Looking at the data from 2023 and 2024, we identified areas where further savings can be made,” he added.
Additionally, Arthur pointed out some key findings from the exercise, including discrepancies in allowance payments.
“We discovered certain anomalies, such as employees who were entitled to allowances but were not receiving them,” he noted.
The FWSC remains committed to expanding its payroll monitoring efforts to ensure greater financial accountability and efficiency within the public sector.
