For the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to effectively rebuild and strengthen its position ahead of the 2028 elections, it would be in their best interest if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia voluntarily decides not to contest again.
According to Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, rather than being pressured to step aside, Dr. Bawumia should make the decision on his own. He argues that the challenges surrounding him, which contributed to the NPP’s defeat, are systemic. His voluntary withdrawal would enable the party to start its restructuring process early without his influence.
“It would be in the NPP’s best interest if Bawumia voluntarily chooses not to run again instead of being forced out. His decision would allow the party to begin rebuilding sooner, as the issues he represents are deeply rooted,” Dankwah stated on Metro TV’s *Good Evening Ghana* on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
Following its poor performance in the December 2024 general elections, the NPP established a committee in January 2025 to analyze its electoral defeat.
At a press conference, the party’s National Chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, admitted that the NPP had performed poorly.
The Electoral Commission’s official results, which excluded nine constituencies at the time, showed John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing victory with 6,328,397 votes (56.55% of valid votes), while Dr. Bawumia of the NPP garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
“We were optimistic and determined to secure a decisive victory. We worked hard at it, and every member of our campaign teams, from polling stations to the national level, gave their best,” Mr. Ntim stated.
“Undoubtedly, the election outcome was not what we had hoped for. However, while we may have lost this battle, we remain committed to our vision for a better Ghana, guided by the principles of the New Patriotic Party.”
He added that in January 2025, the party would establish a thorough and objective election review committee to assess the results and chart a way forward.
