Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, has announced the government’s plans to improve conditions for members of the Chieftaincy Judicial Committees. Speaking at the National House of Chiefs, he acknowledged the critical role these committees play in resolving disputes related to succession, destoolment, and land ownership.
To ensure the efficiency of the committees, the minister proposed training programs for non-lawyer members to enhance their adjudication skills. He also revealed that the government would engage legal professionals and address concerns about the lack of motivation among lawyers who assist in chieftaincy dispute resolution.
Additionally, Hon. Ibrahim expressed the ministry’s commitment to reviewing the existing Legislative and Constitutional Instruments that govern the chieftaincy system. He assured the chiefs that these efforts would lead to quicker dispute resolution, a more effective traditional leadership structure, and ultimately, national peace and stability.
