Chaos at vetting: Speaker Bagbin’s ‘autocratic posture’ is dangerous – NPP

The leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, of adopting an autocratic approach to intimidate the minority caucus in the House.

According to the party, the suspension of three of their Members of Parliament (MPs) following last week’s chaos during the vetting proceedings is unacceptable and poses a threat to their ability to hold the government accountable.

“The party views this selective and autocratic posture of the Speaker as dangerous, with these actions packaged to cow the minority into submission, consequently weakening its potential to hold the government accountable,” the party stated in a press release issued on Monday, 3rd February.

The party only responded officially to the suspension of the four MPs – three from the NPP and one from the NDC, after the minority caucus addressed a news conference in Parliament today, Monday, February 3, on the same subject matter.

Former Majority Leader, Osei Kye-Mensah-Bonsu, also condemned the Speaker’s decision to suspend the MPs, asserting that Mr Bagbin had violated the constitution and failed to adhere to the standing orders of Parliament.
