The NDC Minority displayed resilience and tenacity during the 8th Parliament – Afenyo-Markin

As Ghana’s 8th Parliament draws to a close, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has shared his reflections on the challenges experienced during this period of intense political activity.

Speaking in Parliament on Monday, January 6, 2025, Afenyo-Markin characterized the NDC Minority as a “tough, stubborn, and difficult side,” which he said made achieving consensus nearly impossible.

“Mr. Speaker, many people didn’t understand why I had to adopt a combative stance at times. Some criticized me, saying, ‘You are the Majority Leader, just reach out.’ But they didn’t know the pressure I was under,” he remarked.

“Mr. Speaker, the Minority was indeed a tough, stubborn, and difficult group to work with. Agreements were elusive because they were sensing a chance at power—and understandably so,” Afenyo-Markin elaborated.

He highlighted the significant challenges in advancing government business due to limited cooperation from the Minority.

“The number of government initiatives I had hoped to push through—whether for political advantage or on principle—was hindered because I couldn’t secure the support of our respected colleagues,” he concluded.
