The Member of Parliament-elect for Afram Plains North, Worlase Kpeli, has announced plans to consult his constituents before deciding whether to align with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament.
Kpeli’s decision comes after a contentious period in which he was suspended by the NDC and contested the Afram Plains North parliamentary seat as an independent candidate, ultimately securing victory.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, December 23, Kpeli emphasized the importance of engaging with the electorate before making such a critical decision regarding his parliamentary alignment ahead of the 9th Parliament’s inauguration on January 7, 2025.
In July 2024, the NDC suspended Kpeli over allegations of misconduct—a decision he contested but respected by running as an independent candidate.
Despite the suspension, he reiterated his dedication to serving his constituents and advancing development in Afram Plains North.
Kpeli noted that determining his parliamentary alignment requires careful consideration and input from the people he represents, underscoring the nuanced nature of such a decision.
“There are a lot of things that go into this decision and consultations. There are decisions that one must go through to determine who to do business with, and I will have to consult my people before.”
Kpeli also raised a legal and procedural issue concerning his status within the NDC. While acknowledging his suspension, he argued that the NDC’s constitution does not explicitly prohibit a member from running as an independent candidate.
“Looking through the NDC’s constitution, there is no express clause that goes against me going independent. It is just by convention that we all say it, but expressly, I don’t see any binding clause that forfeits my membership in the National Democratic Congress (NDC).”
