Catholic Bishops condemn post-election violence, call for national unity

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has expressed grave concern over the violence and unrest that have erupted following the 2024 general elections.

In a strongly worded statement, the Bishops condemned the acts of violence, rioting, and looting that have disrupted peace in various parts of the country, leading to the loss of lives, destruction of property, and deepening divisions among citizens.

“These actions are unacceptable and go against the core values of peace, unity, and respect for life that we, as a nation, hold dear,” the Bishops stated.

The Catholic Bishops Conference has called for an immediate cessation of all violent activities and urged Ghanaians to uphold the peace that has been the hallmark of the nation’s democratic processes.

They emphasized that the use of violence and destruction to express political disagreement undermines democracy and harms society’s most vulnerable members.

The Bishops particularly called on political party leaders to demonstrate responsible leadership in this critical period. They urged leaders to denounce any unlawful actions by their supporters and to actively promote peace and respect for the rule of law.

“Your role as leaders goes beyond seeking power – it involves guiding your followers with wisdom, promoting peace, and ensuring the well-being of every Ghanaian,” they added.

The Bishops also addressed the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies, urging them to remain vigilant and professional in handling the situation. They stressed the need for security personnel to act decisively against perpetrators of violence, treating them as criminals regardless of political affiliations, while ensuring fairness and protecting citizens and property.

“Justice must be served,” the statement emphasized.

The Bishops invited religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the general public to join hands in restoring peace and national cohesion. They highlighted the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and unity in overcoming differences and moving forward as one people.

“May God bless Ghana with peace, harmony, and healing in the aftermath of these turbulent events,” the Bishops concluded, expressing hope that with collective commitment, the nation will emerge stronger and more united.
