In a grand display of tradition and culture, former President John Dramani Mahama was warmly welcomed to the Ga Mantse’s Palace on Thursday. The visit, part of his ongoing #Mahama4Change2024 campaign in the Greater Accra Region, underscored his commitment to deepening collaboration with traditional authorities to foster development and promote cultural heritage.
The meeting with King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Traditional Council, queen mothers, wulomei, and other opinion leaders was marked by rich cultural displays and insightful dialogue. Mahama expressed gratitude for the reception, noting the critical role of traditional rulers in shaping Ghana’s cultural identity and governance.
“The display of alluring tradition and culture and the insightful discussion with our traditional rulers reaffirmed the vital role that traditional authorities play in our society,” Mahama stated.
During his discussions, the former president highlighted the potential of Ghana’s heritage festivals to serve as a catalyst for cultural tourism and local economic growth. “These festivals are more than just celebrations; they are opportunities to promote cultural tourism, boost local economies, and showcase our heritage to the world,” he said.
As outlined in the 2024 Resetting Ghana Manifesto, Mahama reiterated his intention to increase traditional authorities’ representation in Ghana’s decentralised governance structures. This initiative aims to leverage the expertise and influence of chiefs and elders to craft policies that better reflect local needs.
“I have always believed that empowering traditional leaders to take a more active role in governance can create a more inclusive and effective system that honours our cultural roots,” he affirmed.
The visit reflects Mahama’s broader vision of forging stronger partnerships with traditional rulers nationwide, ensuring their voices remain integral to the development process. His pledge to enhance relations with chiefs aligns with his belief that they are not only custodians of tradition but also key stakeholders in Ghana’s progress.
As Mahama continues his campaign, his focus on integrating traditional leadership into governance and development promises a collaborative path forward for Ghana’s future.
